Laser Cataract Surgery

At Lexington Eye Associates, we emphasize excellence in eye care. We take great pride in offering our patients having cataract surgery the safest, most advanced techniques in small-incision cataract surgery.

Laser Cataract Surgery With The CATALYS®

The only way to treat a cataract is through cataract surgery. Until recently, modern cataract surgery used a blade to create a very small incision to remove the cataract and replace the lens. Although cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure performed in the United States, the use of a blade presents the most common complications. The latest advancement in cataract surgery eliminates the use of hand-held instruments to create the incision, and instead uses a laser called the CATALYS®.

The CATALYS® combines a femtosecond laser (like the laser used in blade-free LASIK Surgery), 3D imaging, sophisticated software, and a number of other innovative features that make the cataract procedure highly customized, gentler and significantly more precise than manual surgery.

How Does It Work, and What Are the Steps?

Every eye has a unique size and shape. The advanced 3D imaging technology in CATALYS® builds a 3D map of each eye and tailors the treatment to that map. This enables Lexington Eye Associates’ surgeons to create a customized treatment plan that matches the uniqueness of each eye.

Next, Lexington Eye Associates’ surgeons use CATALYS® to create a circular opening for accessing and removing the cataract. Clinical studies have shown that this opening is approximately 10 times more accurate when performed with CATALYS® than what is achievable by hand. CATALYS® then softens and breaks up the hard cataract into tiny pieces, allowing for gentler, easier cataract removal. These steps set the stage for positioning of the replacement lens.
